Business WiFi vs Consumer Gear
Consumer WiFi routers from Best Buy are not appropriate for business use. They lack centralized management, don't support enterprise authentication (WPA2-Enterprise / 802.1X), have limited firmware update support, and can't segment traffic between guest users and business systems.
We deploy enterprise-grade WiFi using UniFi, Meraki, or similar platforms: centralized controller-based management, VLAN support for network segmentation, WPA3-Enterprise authentication, coverage planning for your physical space, and remote management so we can troubleshoot and update firmware without being on-site.
Network Segmentation
When a guest device, an IoT sensor, or a personal phone connects to your business network and gets compromised, network segmentation determines how far that compromise can spread. Without segmentation, a compromised guest laptop has network access to your file server, NAS, printers, and internal applications.
With segmentation, each class of device lives on its own VLAN with firewall rules controlling what it can reach. Guest WiFi gets internet access only. IoT devices can reach their cloud services only. Business laptops can reach internal resources and the internet. This significantly limits the blast radius of any security incident.
VPN for Remote Access
Remote employees need secure access to internal business systems. Consumer VPN services (NordVPN, ExpressVPN) are for privacy on public WiFi — they're not site-to-site business VPNs. We implement business VPN solutions using WireGuard (modern, fast) or OpenVPN (widely compatible), allowing remote employees to securely reach internal resources as if they were in the office.
We also configure split tunneling where appropriate — routing only internal traffic through the VPN, not all internet traffic — to avoid adding latency to general internet use.
